November 12th -- Lecture by Underwater Photographer

NYC Audubon and the American Littoral Society present a free lecture by underwater photographer, Alex Kirkbride. The lecture will be held at the Central Park Arsenal located on 64th Street and 5th Avenue. The event begins at 6pm sharp and will likely run 90 minuets.

In 2002 Alex Kirkbride set out on what he called "an immense creative challenge". Kirkbride, along with his producer and partner Hazel Todd, traveled the United States for 3 years, covering over 100, 000 miles. Along this trip, Kirkbride photographed underwater images from every state for his book, entitled American Waters, published September 2007.

November 16th -- Ports & Portals with Dr. Jack Tchen at 11AM at Museum at Eldridge Street

Dr. Jack Tchen (New York University) focuses on the development of a unique port culture on the Bowery and Chatham Square in the mid-nineteenth century – fostered by the intermingling of the Chinese, Irish and free black co-workers and neighbors. Tchen evokes the intertwined foodways, music, slang, jokes, songs and stories created from different cultures living amongst each other. Free Event. Call 212.219.0888

December 1st -- Ninth Annual Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square

From 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM Broadway from Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle to 68th Street becomes a winter party. The Lincoln Square Business Improvement District hosts its Ninth Annual “Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square” –– a huge neighborhood festival featuring free family fun, children’s activities, live entertainment including THE BACON BROTHERS, outdoor food tastings and shopping throughout the Lincoln Square area. Proceeds to benefit CITY HARVEST food rescue efforts. Celebration begins (rain, snow or shine) at 5:30 PM with neighborhood tree lighting. Cost: Free entertainment and activities

Now through February 21st -- Gothic: Dark Glamour at The Museum at FIT

From its origins in 18th century gothic literature of terror to its contemporary manifestations in vampire literature and cinema, the gothic has embraced the powers of horror and the erotic macabre. Throughout its history, fashion has been central to our vision of the gothic. The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) presents Gothic: Dark Glamour, the first exhibition devoted to the gothic in fashion. Set in theatrical mise-en-scene suggesting iconic gothic settings, such as the labyrinth, the ruined castle and the laboratory, more than 75 ensembles are on display. The Union Square Partnership has teamed with Big Onion Walking Tours to create a free 90-minute walking tour called Union Square: Crossroads of New York. The tour explores the social and political history of the Union Square neighborhood through discussions of the people, history, architecture, and forces that have shaped this community. You’ll hear how Union Square got its name, see where the legendary Tiffany & Co. once stood, and learn how to read the clock (yes, it’s a clock!) on “The Metronome” sculpture and so much more!
